Monaliza Surfing Resort – The Original Surfing Center since 1980
Monaliza Beach Resort is the original surfing Center in Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union, Philippines since 1980 and we would like to take this opportunity for the accomodations in our most recent event Back 2 the Old New School last July 25 2009 in San Fernando City, La Union.
Let me tell you a story, the idea came from American Surfers who used to work in an American Base in WALLACE located in San Fernando City, La Union in the Philippines. To get here, you need 5 to 8 hours drive to the south depending on the traffic. Let me tell you that the wave can get crowded too especially on weekends when the surf is a real beauty.
Also expect that during the La Union segment for the national contest circuit when every surfer from Manila comes up to San Juan to surf and party hard. Even the president, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her husband Mike were Monaliza locals in the 1970’s, and since then the President has been photographed surfing at nearby Urbiztondo Beach on several occasions. She’s a surfer at heart!
La Union is on the South China Sea. Waves are consistently good in the November to February northeast monsoon season where the waves are less powerful than the typhoon swells on the Pacific side, and is great for longboarderss and shortboarderss.
The point is a reef shelf, fairly flat, which catches all swells from the north and northwest and bends them into long lines, with various sections on different tides. A super-fun hotdog wave, it is well-surfed by some of the country’s best surfers like local Luke Landrigan who now owns his own resort San Juan Surf Camp and even has his own surfing school.
The founder, the late Mr. Gerold Luebben, saw the opportunity from these American Surfers who were looking for accommodations during their days off from work at the base. It all started in 1980 with a nipa cottage with only 2 rooms, under Luebben’s Resort. After 2 years the name was then changed to Monaliza Cottage.
From then on he gradually added another nipa cottage with 2 more rooms, since Nipa Cottages are more often than not destroyed after a strong typhoon, it was then developed and was changed to concrete, comfortable and cozy rooms fronting the beach that would really make you forget the city stress which is now famously known as Monaliza Beach Resort! And mind you, if you get to have a glimpse of the gorgeous owner with those candy eyes and sweet smile, you might want to stay longer.
